Laws in Ireland around unauthorised use of data ?

Hello,

I am looking to know if anyon knows any laws around Information Systems Security in Ireland. I want to know a list of laws that protect the security of systems. I am particulary interested in things around what information can be retrieved around hacking tools and how they do or dont comply with Irish Law - for example - password crackers, wireless sniffers.

The only thing I can see is law around data protection but I dont see any law regarding the mis-use of hacking tools

Surely the misuse of hacking tools implies breaking any data protection law?

I know they don't specifically specify hacking tools unlike German law for example where possession of something simple like nmap is deemed a criminal offence. Not to mention BackTrack ;)

I just grabbed this list from an IT Security policy I designed for a company a while back so it probably covers more than just your query.

given that you can hire so called "ethical hackers" to test your website to see if it has weaknesses, I doubt very much if there are any restricitions around whether the tools themselves are in breech of the law.

That's correct, you are free to use these tools, so long as you don't go after someone else's data or IP.
