I have a few rental properties. One of them was destroyed by flooding in the big freeze and I have received settlement of E42000.

1) Am I obliged to inform insurance companies of other properties? The renewals come every year and in one cae is part of my mortgage and just get a letter saying it's being renewed- in other words no form to complete or question asking me if i have had a claim.
2) What increase in premium can I expect next year on this property and other properties if I inform insurance company.

I am thinking of playing dumb, saying nothing and just paying renewal notices as they come- easier to ask for forgiveness instead of permission as per mr penny apples. I have adopted this policy in a large number of areas in my life due to incresing cynicism and a realisation that everone is out to cover themselves and I have to look after myself as noone else will! And it works. Classsic example is a post I read here from last week- some lad is on a tracker and wants to rent his house out and rang the bank to see if they would move him off his tracker!! God bless the innocence! What did he expect them to say! Just say nothing and keep saying it lads!!

Bad move! Yes you are obliged to tell your other insurers. Its a material fact. How they treat if after that is another matter. Some may not pay any heed to it.

Play dumb at your own peril! You wont have the opportunity to ask forgiveness. It may just lead to an insurer voiding your policy in the event of another claim because you haven't disclosed the previous one. And then you're €42,000 down.

Thanks Petek! Bad move about my general attitude about being easier to ask for forgiveness than permission or bad move not informing insurance company about the claim. Any time I get arenewal I don't remember seeing 'Have you had a claim in the last year' in large print. I'm now assuming this is in the small print of every policy?
