Laptop keyboard showing y for z and vice versa and ? for _ what is going on?

This is only when using internet I typed this up on notepad and it worked fine. How do i fix it?
 
Maybe you're using the settings for another country where the keyboard layout is different.
 
Mine is doing something similar... @ and " are mixed up... How do I change it.
 
I think mine is US keyboard layout. Had to uninstall and reinstall windows recently and this is the result. Any idea how to change from US layout. If you do, please give instructions in 'lay mans terms' please... Not very computer literate.

I have the very same problem, actually mine has been like this since I purchased my desk top about 6 years back. I would also appreciate how to fix it in simply terms!
 
Go into the Control Panel and hunt about for the regional/language settings. It probably tells you all this in windows help.
 
The German keyboard has the 'z' where the y should be, so check language / regional settings in control panel
 
but why did mine spontaneously change to german for internet explorer and not notepad and then change back. some kind of objection to referendum result?
 
also how long have the other posters had this problem and how did you go this long wihtout asking for help? I noticed it and 3 minutes later posted my question! maybe im impatient.
 
In XP, Click Start, Control Panel, Regional Settings
Click the dropdown menu and choose English (Ireland)
You may or may not have to restart your computer after changing the setting

I did this but it didn't change anything. I have XP.

I have had it for about 6 years, I thought it was something to do with the keyboard I have since got used to swapping the @ button for " button.
