Landlords living abroad not paying tax

I have been renting a property for last 2 years. My landlord, who live abroad (UK) told me the tax for the property is being paid. I checked that and found out it wasn't truth. I just read in the Citizen information that if my landlord lives abroad and not paying tax I will need to pay it. Can I make my landlord pay it somehow? I'm paying my rent for last 2 years on time and I think she should be paying the tax plus I have never been advised of any extra costs....But in the same time i don't want to be changing the place I'm happy where I am, just don't want to end up with 10,000 bill from the tax men in 2 years....What should I do? Thanks for the advice Urs
 
Sorry but how do you know tax isn't being paid? The only way for you to know that would be if you had access to his/her tax returns. Have you anything in writing from the landlord stating that tax has been paid? Was it in your lease?
It is very rare for Revenue to go after the tenant in cases such as this.
 
Urs, just to confirm which tax are you referring to? (Income tax on earnings, LPT, etc?). You have confirmation from the landlord that they are handling their tax affairs and they have not requested that you remit their income tax to Revenue. Perhaps get confirmation in writing in order to provide evidence that you did confirm this?
 

Very good question, is this a leak, I am sure Revenue would be interested in how you came by that information?
 

The property isn't registered with PRTB, so obviously income tax isn't paid.
 
Not being registered does in no way prove that your Landlord is not paying tax the rental income. PRTB is a totally different issue altogether. Yes the property should be registered with the PRTB.
Just because a car has a bald tyre does not mean there is no tax or insurance on the car.
 
In relation to the part where the Landlord is living abroad you should be stopping 20% as withholding tax and forwarding this portion to Revenue which will be credited to your landlords tax bill later on.
 
Op, to where do you pay your rent, an Irish bank account in the landlord's name, an Irish bank account in a name other than the landlord's, pay in cash to someone, a UK bank account in the landlord's name or something else?

What is your emergency contact number, mobile/address in UK, or someone in Ireland?

What is the landlord's address on the original lease agreement, in Ireland or the UK?

Posters should stop jumping to conclusions without all the facts.
