The labour patys main way to raise the 2bn would be to stop interest relief for investors.
THey reckon this would save 800million.

If the labour come to power in the near future(presumably with fine gael) then what is the lielihood of this being enforced?

Presumably this would depress house prices significantly further and would result in more debts being defaulted?

What makes you say that?

Anything that encourages Irish investors off the property teat is worth considering, in my opinion.

Interst relief is a very significant saving for investors.

If that is taken away then many investors will simply have to sell up due to being unable to maintain bank repayments along with this added tax.

Seeing as investors account for c. 30% of the market this will lead to many more properties being out on the market thus reducing prices further.

Sounds like a good plan. Roll on the general election.

Except of course that most of Labours soundbites involve public spending in some shape - protecting jobs by state subsidy, giving partnership pay increases, roll out more public sector white elephant projects; and all Gilmore would consider for personal pain is a 5k pension deferral (which he receives on top of his existing salary, expenses and various perks) - so much for the 'shoulder to the wheel'.

Ho hum, never mind, 'cos in the magical world of the delusional electorate this will resolve all our deficit problems and spiralling debt.

Well I don't know about that. The first thing the "delusional electorate" has to come to terms with is how voting FF in the recent past has led to where we are now.

Nobody knows how a non-FF government will perform. But we do know how FF has performed during the boom years. The fact is, we've somehow managed to squander the greatest economic expansion in our history, a time when we could easily have decided to actually put together a decent education system and a decent health system, for a start.

What are we left with after the boom? (silence)
