Just Married - Tax Query

Hi All,

I've recently posted about this before and I've done some research into this but I am hoping someone can confirm this for me.

I got married right at the end of 2009. At the time my wife was unemployed and has been for the start of 2010 also.

Now good news being she has gotten a 6 month job where she will be getting paid 18k (for the year).

Before this good news happened we sent off to the revenue to transfer her credits to myself, I'm currently on 43500.

My calcs are now as follows:

I was coming out with approx 2700 a month and now will come out with approx 3100 or so.

Because she is earning only 18k (for the year) she won't be taxed and will only have to pay the income levy at the lower rate.

Is the above correct?

Any comments are appreciated, we just need to make best use of our tax credits as money is tight at the moment.

Sorry to burst your bubble but as she has given her tax credits to you the only tax credit left to her is her PAYE credit of 1830.
This means she will be paying tax at the lower rate on anything she earns over 9150

Thanks for the feedback Blacksheep, will get onto the revenue and ask them to asses us so we can get the best out of our credits

I think this is where its hard to get back to work when earning such a low amount because sometimes you come out with feck all!!!

From the help you provided BlackSheep I think I can see that she will be paying roughly €35 a week, so it makes sense that we should transfer her credits to myself.

Tried to get someone in the revenue but unfortunately no one there seems free to talk at the moment!

Looks like that would be your best option to leave things as they are, if she is not working for the second half of the year don't forget to do a reckon up at the end of the tax year. She may be due a refund of tax and levy
