just handed in notice, advise is needed

I have just handed in my notice at work and have accepted a similar position with another company. I found working at my current employment exceptionally stressful due to the way the owner ran the place.

I have been to the doctor and he has that I am totally stressed out and not to work my notice (given 2 weeks notice).

I am not sure if I can do this, hand in my notice and then go out sick? Also if I do go out sick I assume I can not start my new employment until I officially finish my current position?

It's hateful to be in such a situation. I'm not sure of the legalities but have you any holidays that you need to use up?
Is the fact you have handed in your notice and secured a new job not a weight of your shoulders. If is is however certified sick then I'm sure there should not be an issue.
 
Your doctor can certainly surely give you a sick cert citing stress and advising time off
