Job Seeker's Benefit While Waiting for Pension Set Up

Hi All

In a previous post I said that I intended to stop working next year at the age of 63.

I have heard that my pension provider needs to sell my existing portfolio and then transfer the funds to the new provider who will set up an ARF with a new portfolio.

This process could take several months to complete.

In the interim period between stopping work and the setting up of an ARF from which to draw income, can I claim Job Seeker’s Benefit?

Yes though you'll need to be seeking work in the eyes of the DSW so be aware of that when you're applying for JSB.

Note. If you leave your job voluntarily to retire then you probably would be disqualified from the first 9 weeks of job seekers payment, by which time the pension willl likely be available

Unlikely if you can genuinely cite something like fatigue, stress or burnout as the reason for quitting.

As it happens I took early retirement 2 years ago aged 63. I applied online for Jobs Benefit and was honest, just stating I was taking early retirement. There was no problem and I received my JB the following week!

Safer to say something generic like stress or burnout and avoid the word retirement. Particularly if under 60.

In my case it was about timing as I was 63 and had sufficient PRSI to cover the JB for 9 months.

You can claim JSB as long as you satisfy the requirement of actively seeking employment.

It doesn’t necessarily end with your receipt of a private pension. JSB is not means tested so you can potentially continue to receive it as long as you satisfy the conditions.
