Job Offer

I was offered a job last thursday subject to references and a medical. As far as I am aware there is no reason for me for me to get a bad reference from either my previous employer or current employer and I should have no problem passing a medical. But I have heard nothing from my prospective employer since Friday afternoon regarding my the position but I know for a fact both of my references have been contacted and were happy enough to speak to them by monday afternoon.

Its a big company with over a 1000 employees in their head office alone and considering i won't be starting for another four weeks am I being a little over anxious? I have never worked for a big company before so I have no idea how all this works so really I am just looking for assurance especially as I have already handed in my notice.

Have you done your medical yet? It's unlikely you'd hear back from them until they have received everything

Give them a full week at least. You heard nothing since Friday but only three working days have passed since then. I'd say myself that you will hear something before the week is out.

Well Ive heard nothing about them regarding the medical. Not sure where that is to be done or if I just get a letter from my doctor.

Normally they'll give you the name of their company doctor and you make your own appointment, If you haven't heard from them by the end of the week I'd do what Lauren suggests and ask them about the procedure

So its normal for companies to take that long? Every other job I had only took a few days to get everything sorted so im really not used to all this. Ive freaked that I will go home and find a letter withdrawing their offer of employment.

They would not send letter, as you have not signed any contracts, you should contact HR and ask when med is, and when you will officially be notified of employment.

Ok well I hope that is true. I will give them a buzz tomorrow afternoon, I am probably in a tizzy over nothing.

Ok update. I decided to ring company after lunch after speaking to my boss about all this. So I was told the girl who offered me the job and had chased up my references had walked out on Tuesday and that someone else had taken over her work. They didn't seem to know I had been offered the job but they said they will get back to me asap.

I will leave it until lunch time tomorrow and if I hear nothing from them I will get back on the phone to them. Im happy enough that its just a mix up but what the hell happens if they say i was never offered the job. Ive handed in my notice so it really is a worry for me now.</I></U></B>

Oh dear, do you really still want to work for them now ? Anyway, I assume you were interviewed by someone other than the 'girl who walked out' ? Try to contact them - they should be able to confirm your job offer.

I suspect your current employer would be sympathetic to you if this all fell through. After all, if you stay, your employer won't have the hassle of finding a replacement.

Ok. They just rang and said sorry about the mix up and your contract is in the mail!!! Phew.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Really not sensible handing your notice in with current employer until you have confirmation of an offer and all aspects of it incl. salary etc, in writing. You could have been left totally high and dry with nothing and burnt your bridges. Best of luck with the new job.

Never, never hand in your notice based on a conditional offer. Make it clear to the new employer that your notice period won't start until they do whatever it takes to make the offer unconditional, and get it in writing.
