Does anyone have feedback regarding companies that allow/encourage this, particularly in the C/C++ area or companies that would provide training and time in the office initially and then allow employee to work remotely either on a full or part time basis?

Hi,

This is becoming a lot more popular with nearly all the bigger companies.
One company that I know allow it and encourage it are IBM.

What area of the country are you in?

It's certainly becoming more common, the company I work for have a policy that allows us to work from home 1 day a week and another, smaller department had a lot of staff moved to work from home offices as a cost cutting measure.

I know an ex colleague of mine left to work for Sun Microsystems and was employed to work from home. He did work for them before however so that could have had some bearing on it.

Would you become a contractor? I know a few lads working from home as Java contractors...

In my experience its very difficult to get a job that allows you to work from home even 1 day a week. Anyone I know in IT that is allowed to work remotely has been with their company for a long time. They have established themselves and are allowed at the discretion of their mgr to work from home 1 day a week or whenever something comes up at home. All these people have kids.

I know a few contractors who work remotely but they are very well established in their field and know the senior management in the company where they are contracting.

I have the option to work from home if need be, but I dont often take advantage of it unless there is something I need to stay at home for or if i am sick. In my line of work its easier to be in the office most days.

Not sure if I can post names of companies but if you PM me I can send you the names of some companies where I know of people who have worked from home in the past. If you find one of these jobs hang onto it! Good luck.
