Is there any adaptor for surround sound speakers to dvd recorder?

I recently bought a dvd recorder and was hoping I could replace my old dvd player (which came as part of a home cinema setup so has connections at the back for all the speakers) with this. However my dvd recorder has no connections for the surround sound speakers. So I'm just wondering if anyone has come across this problem before and found any way around it (i.e. is there any adaptor that the speakers can connect to and that can then be plugged into the dvd recorder)? I asked in Peats but the lad there didn't think it was possible and that I would have to keep the original dvd player for when I wanted to use the surround sound but if possible I'd like to avoid this (too many cables for my liking!!).
 
If the old DVD player came with the speakers as a package, then the player is probably a surround sound amplifier as well, where as the new recorder doesn't have an amplifier component. You have 2 options I can think of. Keep the old DVD player & use it as an amp (assuming there's some form of audio output/input between the 2 players), or buy a seperate amp, like they have [broken link removed]. Not a cheap option.
 
Most DVD recorders have digital outputs (either optical or coaxial).

If you don't want to got for a separates-based surround system, you could buy an inexpensive 5.1 surround system package normally sold to computer gamers. Creative have some. Essentially, they're the same as the DVD/amp/speaker packages without the DVD player. They should at least be able to handle Dolby 5.1, the most common surround sound format.

Just make sure that its compatible with whatever kind of digital output you may have.
 
What make and model is the new DVD recorder? Just curious as to what outputs it actually has...
 
It's a Philips DVDR3575H DVD Player Recorder Clubman. The problem I have is with the speaker connections (two wires from each speaker, so 12 wires connecting into the back of the dvd player that came with the home cinema set) - there is no such interface available at the back of my dvd recorder (only scart connections or other such standard connections).
 
Only cheaper DVD players have built-in amplifiers and bundled speakers. Your player is not designed to have speakers directly connected. This is typical as it allows you to choose a separate surround amp and speakers according to your preference.

Yours has a digital coaxial output, so what you now need is a surround amplifier that has a coaxial digital input.

Not necessarily.

Couldn't he connect the DVD recorder's scart output to his current DVD player / surround sound all-in-one machine's scart input? If I understand scart correctly, it carries video & audio, even if it's not true DD 5.1, doesn't it?

Or if the all-in-one has a digital coax input, that would allow connection via that option.

Or even if it has a digital optical input, he could get a coax to optical converter and use that option.

He could in these two latter cases connect the S-video output of the DVD recorder to his TV, so video is going to the TV and audio is going to his current DVD player all-in-one.

For best quality and ease of use, a single coaxial digital audio connection is the way to go.

Yes, there are other ways, but let's keep it simple.
