I have an old wooden (pine I think) kitchen table with matching bench and two chairs. Have nowhere to put in in new home but before trying to give it to a charity shop (who seem to be very fussy these days about what they take and might not like it because it's old) I was wondering if it'd be possible to do something to convert it into an outdoor table for the garden. Would it simply be a matter of coating it with some kind of varnish? Would that be enough to protect it relatively well from the elements? Assuming that in winter I would also get some kind of a cover for it. Am pretty much an absolute beginner when it comes to DIY and am just not sure if wood needs to be treated more than just an outer coat to be suitable for use outside.
