there is an Odlums flour mill in portarlington, it was on the verge of closing before covid but covid gave it a new lease of life and the importance of having a domestic flour milling facility was realised.
Irish wheat is generally not of a high enough standard for milling, when Dev was trying to do self sufficency and during the war they were using irish flour to a large extent and it was blackish rather than white in colour due to lack of sunshine for full ripening. After the war they started getting Canadian wheat and the difference in quality was immediately evident.
