Hi,

I've been summoned for Jury Duty in the Republic. I work for a Northern Ireland company and their Jury Duty policy only covers Northern Ireland - where they reduce your pay if the duty is more than 8 hours and you apply to the court for reimbursement for loss of earnings.

Do I have an opt-out option working in Northern Ireland or should my company have a different policy for the South?

Can you not just reply to the summons saying you work in NI and can't be spared from work/get paid for your time? I think that's a fairly reasonable excuse.

You can apply for an exemption...but don't get your hopes up. I met a self employed guy a few years back who got tied up in a case for months and lost a fortune because he was told he didn't qualify for an exemption and had to show up.
