Investing in Stocks and Shares

Hi guys,
Looking for a bit of advice.I am interested in dabbling in stocks and shares but have no idea how to go about it.I would prefer to do it independently ie not through bank products but rather on line.Interested in the way one goes about this,the charges involved,which stockbrokers are best?Is there any book which gives one advice in getting involved in the stock market?
