Hi.
A family relative is on invalidity pension for several years.
His wife does not work and recently has developed an illness as well.
He has recently been awarded half rate carers allowance.
Do they pay tax on this or what is the situation as they are old-ish and confused.
As far as they are aware the invalidity pension is non taxable.
They have no property or any other income. They depend solely on these payments.

Thanks

Vectra,
Carers Allowance and Invalidity pension are considered as taxable income. If they have no other income than what you have mentioned then they will not be liable to pay any tax.

Hi
DCD
So I can safely tell them they need not worry about anything. Just collect their money and enjoy it?

Not sure what "old-ish" means.
If they are both over 66 they would then have automatically have moved on to the State Contributory Pension. State pension plus qualified adult allowance plus half rate Carers allowance would bring them close to taxable rates.

Vectra,
As black sheep states if they are on State Pension it would bring them very close if not slightly over taxable rates.
That said if all income is totaled tax due would be small.

Not on state pension yet. They are both just around 60,
So invalidity pension plus the carers.
I think in total they mentioned in the region of 430 a week.

Vectra,
All ok then. Get down to local Citizens Information in your area or phone and ask about extra household benefits attached to invaildity pension and carers benefit. Good luck. A few basic extra allowances may very well be available.
