hi everyone, just moved into a new house and wanted to put my computer in the loungeroom but my phone line is inthe hall. bought a wireless adapter but it wont work!! anyone suggestions

Very little to go on here but I'll kick off anyway,
have you got broadband?
have you got a wireless router to go with the adapter?
have you configured your pc/laptop to see the router?
can you see the router from your pc/laptop?

Thanks for getting back to me car... Yeah i have eircom broadband... Bought a wireless router today from PC World called Devolo DLAN 200AV (if that makes any sense toyou, because it dosent to me!!) I just bought what the man in the shop said to get. Basically I want my computer in the sitting room but the phone cable is in the hall way... I just didnt want to have wires dragged through the house so thats why i went to the shop to get this Devolo thing... Installed it and everything but it wont work....

Tilly1, please look at car's other questions and answer the rest of them.

Tilly1, it's possible that there is a little button on your laptop/pc for switching the wireless facility off/on - I had a similar problem a while back and discovered the wireless button had slid to off, moving it back to on solved the problem - have a good look at the front/sides/back of your computer.

It's 'wireless' in sense that it uses the mains to avoid laying out ethernet cables, but it's not WiFi and calling it a wireless router is very misleading. It relies on your house's existing electrical wiring. I've never used one, so it will be interesting th ehar how you get on. I must say it was brave and unorthadox of the PC World guy to suggest it when common choice is either a combined DSL Modem/Router or a WiFi router to be connected to the Eircom modem.

I think the original poster needs to tell us what he's done so far to get it working. The problem could be between the Broadband modem and the router or between the laptop and the mains/network adaptor. Step by step following of the manufacturer's intructions and step by step diagnostics are how you get this stuff working.
