Improving air circulation in an apt

Hi,

Despite having tricle vents on my wondows and a vent in the wall of my bedroom I'm experiencing condensation on my windows and one north facing wall. I understand what is causing this ( My general lifesyle - drying clothes indoors, cooking, breathing etc..) however I'm not willing to leave my windows open constantly or leave a dehumidifier running. I think that the solution to my problem would be to improve the circulation of the air around the apartment.

I'm thinking about installing some type of air circulation device. Do such things exist? I've googled the Flatmaster 2000 and was wondering if anyone has any experience of this? How would I go about getting it installed?

Did you think about installing a fan extractor like in a bathroom over one of your wall vents. It would pull out air in which air can circulate in your room. Worth a try.

The room in question is a bedroom.. Would the extractor fan be too loud? Thanks for your reply - I'm always open to suggestions!

Drying clothes inside is by far the worst cause of damp; everytime you dry a bundle of clothes you're adding litres of water to the air. Either get a drier installed, or buy an dehumifier with a laundry/drying action function and use that when drying clothes.

Not really, the cheap ones will make noise but in general their not bad, you can always put it on a timer, so it can work during the day and go off when your in bed

I'm having similar probs in bedrooms of my apartment, with result that darkish mould is halfway up wall in corner of 1 room, and nearly there in other room. Carpet is also destroyed in a few patches by it. I know that previous tenants had heat on constantly and no windows open which caused original problem, but now new ones say they don't have heat on and there's still mould. They don't leave windows on 'day-lock' overnight or while at work, which I always did and never had a problem in 3 yrs.....
has anyone had new (extra) wall vents put in and how much would they cost (roughly)? How much are de-humidifiers?

They vary a lot in price depending on capacity..have a look here.

Thanks for that. I am wondering if there could be some other reason for it so am going to get an 'expert' out to have a look...hopefully nothing too sinister!

There is much more to this than vents in your bedroom...the damp on the north wall may in fact come also from Kitchen Steam and Bathroom steam....which may even come from the other end of the house/flat. Also the basic presence of people in a house will cause condensation through perspiration through skin and breathing. Any Furniture that is placed alongside the north wall should be moved away from it at least 6 inches to allow the air to circulate around the wall. Also if cleaning the wall special anti fungal liquids should be mized with hot water...which should help kill mould and prevent it growing back quicker.
Re the vents...unobstructed "Cross Ventilation"....would be best ...as roof spaces and underfloor of suspended timber floors are designed.....this involves having vents placed on opposite walls....If there is only one vent in the room...the wind may be actually blowing air into the room....cross ventilation is best as natural air pressure will suck stale air out of room...so no need to worry about mechanical trickle vents breaking down.....

I forgot also to mention Plants, Drycleaners, Washing machines, Pets etc etc all these cause condensation on Cold North Facing Walls
