I was working with the same company for 5 years previously to being made redundant in January 2009.

I was in receipt of job seekers benefit from January 2009 until November 2009.

I started working in November 2009 and signed off the dole. I have been paying the full rate of tax since resuming work.

A friend of mine who worked in the same company for the same amount of time and was made redundant when I was found work in July 2009 (a few months before me). He paid little or no tax for 5 or so months and is still on a very low tax rate.

Does anyone know if I should be entitled to tax credits to carry over for this year (2010) since I didnt work more than 2 months in 2009??

Tax credits don't carry over from tax year to tax year. You start 2010 on a clean slate as it were. However you may have tax adjustments in 2009 which may result in a refund (or underpayment). You can settle 2009 by filing returns with Revenue.

Your friend may have had unused credits which resulted in low or no tax for a period up to the year end. However he too should be on new credits for the new 2010 year.

thanks for the quick reply

so basically me being unemployed in 2009 will have no bearing on my PAYE tax for 2010 and i may only be eligible for tax returns for tax which i paid in the year jan 1st 2009 - dec 31st 2009?
