I stole money and was caught. What will happen?

Im looking for help . I stole money from a club but paid it all back give statement to gaurds which they will send away to the dpd .do ye think this will go to court .
 
A lot depends on circumstances.

If it goes to court the judge will take into account
- if you plead guilty
- if you returned the money
- if you apologised
- if you have taken steps to understand the reasons you did this and are likely or unlikely to do something similar in the future.
- if it is your first offence.

The DPD could take months to reach a decision. So this could drag on for a long time. Justice is in the public eye because people need to see that you cannot break the law without punishment.

But maybe consider what you can do while the months pass. Once you understand the underlying reasons for the theft perhaps you can take steps to change. Earn more money, change the habits that made you want more money, and then consider what you can do to become a better citizen, maybe volunteer (I would steer away from anything to do with money). But tidy town clean ups, being a marshal at events, stuff like that.

If it ever does go to court you may be able to say you are a different person now and that you understand the breach of trust and that you are doing x y or z to better yourself and the community.

I am not asking how much money was involved and I don't want you to say.
Amount is relevant to which court deals with it i.e. Circuit Court or District Court.
This might be an "either way" offence i.e., it might be triable in either the Circuit Court or the District Court.
If the amount is not big the DPP might accept an early guilty plea and agree to it being disposed of in the District Court.
The benefit to you would be that that the District Court has lower sentencing powers.

Some additional thoughts ;

1. I trust that your statement to the Gardai was made after caution.

2. I trust that you had the benefit of advice from a solicitor before making the statement or at least the offer of a solicitor first.

3. Returning the misappropriated money does not nullify the offence. However, it is commendable that you repaid the entire amount and that
should be to your credit.

Not clear what you mean by a club, is it a night club or a sports club and were you in a position of trust. That, and the amount of money in question and the impact the theft had on the club may have an impact.

The fact that you've paid it back, I presume have a clean record and are prepared to plead guilty will work in your favour.

DPD are a parcel company I believe and are not involved in the Justice system, yet.
Are you referring to the Director of Public Prosecutions , also known as the DPP?

wish the OP well, a family member did this, at the time he was in his twenties, dealing with an accident where his friend lost his life and he couldnt rescue him in time in a pool in the USA and another who was in a fatal car crash here at home, he didn't deal with the two accidents happening so close together, drank, did drugs and one night in an act of spontaneity took 8K stg from the restaurant he worked in. Our parents reimbursed it in full, it went to court (UK) and he was not sentenced, the irony is he was studying law at the time. Sometimes we do things and regret them. It will work out in the end.
