Just wondering what people would think of setting up a hypnosis practice.

I am thinking of doing a hypnosis course and then setting up in practice for mayself.

What sort of things should i look at for a business plan perspective and are these practices viable?

Have you completed any Market Research on this idea even just by searching Google for "hypnosis ireland" or similar? Have you tried looking through the Golden Pages or searching on goldenpages.ie to determine competitors and/or how big the market is?

And do not forget a good insurance cover because you may be affecting peoples lives at a deep level and I am not sure that you are going to be qualified enough to comprehend the possible outcome.
Maybe I am wrong and if you just specialise in things like giving up smoking then you can not do much harm.

yeah i have searched for it on the internet and some of of the treatment results does seem to be unrealistic and i have been reading up on it itself. the course itself costs over 2k which is alot of money and they say they train approx 100 a year and they have been doing it for 15 years. I then wondered why they only have under 300 registered members if they would have trained approx 1500 people. ie what happened the other 1200 who may have taken the course. but the person i spoke to said he didnt know about that.

I was initially looking at counselling and came across it that way. In the golden pages there aint that many and you do see some ads in the local rags.

I am a bit skeptical myself about some of the claims but i was looking at it more of a sideline while i study counselling and could use it as part of treatment for that. It just theat i am at a loose end at the moment while i wait for the counselling course to start next January and wanted to do something in the meantime.

Some of the exps i can see is Personal Indemnity insurance and public liability insurance. Membership of an organisation, office space rental and all costs associated with that etc

An acquaintance of mine set up in business as an alternative therapist (can't remember which kind) and left it after about 4 months. She said she was getting people with eating disorders and other serious problems and felt she wasn't equipped for the responsibility. At least she was ethical. Others not so and I'm sure we're all aware of cases highlighted in the media in recent years. So, my advice is to be very careful and be fully aware of what competencies your course will equip you with. And of course be damn sure that your course has proper accreditation!

Hi there

have you considered a certificate in NLP - very useful and very powerfull

Hi There all,

thanks for the replies the problems with Hypnotherapy is that there is no accreditation which is the thing that worries me most. Basically anyone can set up there own accrediation and courses and call themselves something like the Professional college of Hypnotherapy and have the letters PCH after their name. Also it seems that everyone that takes the course passes the course and there are no qulaifications whatsoever neccessary to do the course ie you don't even need a pass junior cert.

You can call me elitist but i would have preferred if a person was required to have a 3rd level qualification from a recognised university. I was hoping to do this as part of counselling and therapy that i want to get into through a NUI course and thought that this could be a beneficial and complementary tool in the treatment of patients.

Where would i look into the NLP Cert and i presume this is in the same boat as hypnosis certification. I may just end up self teaching myself the hypnosis methods from some textbooks on the web and then decide to get some form of accrediation at a later stage. Maybe i should copyright the Professional college of Hypnotherapy and setup my own school ;-).

Sully no disprespect but have you looked at all options

ICHP based in Cork are the recognised body for hypnosis training, they are well regarded and are the only legit body in Ireland

Regarding NLP are the best, they are certified and recognised by Richard Bandler.

I would suggest you think hard about this one. You will need a certificate/diploma to practice, they will help you with insurance etc

Hypnosis is great and can really help, i would say get a few books read up on it, talk to others, contact ICHP. In order to be credible you need a certificate behind you, people will not have faith in you if you have just learnt stuff from a book

I would also look at the whole NLP area, to me it is more meaningful, basically looks at the present and the future, rather than dwelling on the past and the present. again depends what your thoughts are on counselling etc (although nlp is not counselling) it can achieve fantastic results very quickly

if you want to chat pm me and we can talk

Hi Selfemployed,

i Have checked out the ICHP and it is with them that i am thinking of going with for the course in hypnosis.

I do recognise the benefits of hypnosis. And do you really need a certificate or diploma to practice hypnotherapy?

What recognition do these certification places have. It seems that they 'Create' their own certifiaction process and use lettering after their names to add creditability to their business. It perhaps like buying a doctorate and going by Dr Joe Bloggs and it seems to add creditablility. for eg that woman on "you are what you eat" program goes as Dr Gillain Mckeith but is not an MD and got her 'Doctorate' from some online US site. It seems these professions are rife with people claiming to be Dr so and so and very few are MD or receive a doctorate from a recognised university.

Hey Scully

Within the self-help/hypnosis area Kearney, the man in charge of ICHP is well regarded.

I do think it is important to have certification, i myself enrolled on the course and the notes are good as is the reading list

I did not complete the course as i found that hypnotheraphy was not where i wanted to specialise, i am not a great fan of looking to the past, therefore i used what i learnt about hypnosis and developed my skills into NLP and Life/Business Coaching, which is the business i am setting up

NLP looks at trance/hypnosis as a very usable tool

let me know if i can help further
