Hi all,
I'm employed in Ireland since June 2009. I have a PPS number a pay a lot of tax :) My husband is a stay at home husband. He has no job and no PPS number. We were married in May 2009 and I was taxed as a single in 2009. Two main questions:
* Do I have rights to claim his tax credit for 2009?
* How can I change my tax certificate to be taxed as a married person with only one income??

Another important question - do I have to do all this until 31st October 2010??

Thanks a mill!

Hi Maya

Every resident in Ireland has a PPS No. Call the tax office to get you the PPS No and you can sort out the tax credit with them over the phone.

No it doesn't have to be done prior to the 31st Oct. Also if you were married in May 2009 you will be able to claim for the remainder of 2009 as well.

BTW when I went through the process of changing the tax bands for my husband and I, I have to say the tax officer I dealth with was extremely helpful. I was very happy and surprised with how easy it was.

Lucky you.
I felt like I was being treated like a criminal.

People who came to Ireland from abroad don't automatically get PPS numbers if they have no job, don't claim benefits, don't pay tax of some kind. I think one has to apply to get a PPS number but it is probably unnecessary in this case.

I think the best thing to do is go to your tax office and ask them to tax you as a married person, telling them your husband doesn't work and doesn't have PPS number. If he needs to apply for the PPS number, the tax office will tell you how but I think it won't be necessary.

Also tell them when you got married and ask them to recalculate your tax and refund you the overpayment. You don't need to do this by 31 October but obviously the sooner you do it, the sooner you'll get the refund:)

Many years ago my husband was in a similar position as I didn't work and had no PPS number then. All it took to sort out his tax was one visit to the tax office.
