How to stop internet connection

Unfortunately I have a dial up internet connection. Once I turn onthe PC, it trys to connect to the internet automatically - is there anyway of stopping this from happening?

I've gone to the settings for the dial up but nothing in there seems to stop it from trying to connect.

Check the startup folder - if there is a shortcut to the application is in there then delete the shortcut so it wont try to run on start up.

Various applications can trigger the Internet connection when checking for upgrades. IM clients too. These may be following whatever was set in the Connections menu of Internet Explorer. Go there and set 'never dial a connection', that might help.

If you've got a rogue dialler in your system, perhaps trying to connect you via an ISP in Antigua, it might be more difficult to stop.

While your sorting this out plug out the lead from the PC to the telephone socket just in case it is a rogue dialler.

Edoted to add - check with your phone provider what calls have been made recently, if there are any long distance calls that you can't account for then don't try the dialup connection until you know you have de-bugged your PC.
