How to Get rid of Lleyandia??

I have about 70 lleyandia on 2 sides of my site and i want rid of them. I have a landscaper looking at this but was trying to check it out myself. I manged to get a composting facility that will take them from me if I deliver them to their facility - they will do the shredding..

The landscaper said he can cut them down for me, my problems are:

(1) how do I transport them? DO I need a Tractor and trailer? or what kind of vehicle do I need?

(2) I was given a rate of €20 a tonne a t the composting facility but I am trying to get a ball park figure on what the total job is going to cost before I fire ahead - any idea what kind of weight will be in 70 No. 20 ft lleyandia???

(3) Some of the tops of the trees are touching wires above - will the ESB charge me for turning off the power for a day or 2 and how do I go about this?

(4) Any other suggestions ?

I hope all the people who post about planting trees for privacy see this post.

I'd say you will need major equipment to remove them. My dad knocked similar once and it took ages (half the summer holidays). He chopped them up for firewood but they were very sappy.
 
hire a mulcher/chipper and sell the chippings, Speedy hire them at a reasonable rate.

Get a properly qualified, equipped and insured tree-surgeon in to look after the felling, electricity issues etc.

Any chance you could log the trees and store logs for 18 months and use them for fuel?
 
When I moved down the sticks 12 yrs ago, there were a number of ash trees along one side of my boundary (site is 2 acres and surrounded by farms) that had grown up to the height of the esb's overhead wires.
Local farmer next door rang them and they sent a crew of their own out to cut them down to a safe height. There was no charge at the time. Don't know if they do now, although I would think there still is'nt as the esb are getting to run cables over your land for free.
Maybe you could try this
 
Your biggest issue will be fellin the tress with the ESB wires;
I would hire a tree surgeon, and make sure they have insurance;

Hire any farmer with a tractor and trailer to do the delivery for you

Maybe to one side this year and another next year
 
Would you recommend Leylandia as a privacy screen on a country site? Sounds unlikely! Could anyone recommend me a good alternative? I just want a privacy screen about 8 ft high at most.

Leylandii are a pain and imho grow too quickly in the Irish climate. If you are willing to trim them twice per year without fail they can make a fantastic, dense privacy screen. However, they have zero wildlife benefit and are expensive and time-consuming to keep properly.

Something native would be far better - how about hornbeam? Relatively quick-growing and although deciduous it keeps a good proportion of its leaves all winter. It also responds extremely well to shaping into a hedge and, if in the future it gets too big, comes back well from being cut back hard - something conifers like leylandii cannot do.

Some advice [broken link removed] you might be interested in. FWIW I have griselinia, and have had no problem with root disease, hornbeam and photina hedging. I find them all easy to manage with a once a year cut - I keep the grisilinia at around 8' and the other two around 5'.
 
Never ever put Leylandii in the ground, if I knew then what I know now, our neighbours would never have seen their cute little one foot Leylandii (all 4 of them in the FRONT garden) grow to be so tall I can hardly see out the bedroom window. This is the year I am going to insist he cut the damn things down :mad:
