I have read somewhere on the many threads for the uk pension buyback of a few people who ran into a problem with having their passport in the married name but not their NI number. How can you fix this? I can find nothing online about changing your name without signing into your gateway account. I think some said they went to Newry to do it? Any info greatly appreciated for a friend of mine.

Hi, once you have a gateway account with your N.I. number you can ring them, they will confirm your details, security type questions and they can change it for you. It’s usually a 50 minute wait to get through but they are very helpful once you get through. 00 44 191 203 7010

You cannot open a gateway account when your passport is in your married name and your national insurance number is in your maiden name, It has happened to people on here.

Yes, you can set up the account in your maiden name but it won’t let you access your N.I. history, however, once you have set it up, ring them, update your record verbally with them. Leave it 24hours to log back in, and it will have corrected to your married name, use the gov.uk id check app to sync your account to your passport. I have done this only last week for my own account.

@Nellers thanks we tried this several times but it just would not work, no matter what we couldn't open a government gateway account it would not accept the passport with the married name.

If you set up the account in your maiden name, it wont accept your married name passport, no matter how many times you scan it. You will have to ring them first confirm your details then wait 24 hours for it to update then you can log back in. The phonecall has to be made, there’s no other way around it.

Thanks Nellers, I was confused because you said to set up the account first, then ring them which wasn't working. Who do you ring? I am doing this for a friend, have already done my own with the help of this thread.

Yes set up account in maiden name, you won’t be able to do much until your ring them, I’ve listed the number in the first reply to you, it takes an age to get through but they are very helpful.
