how to find out who a 1800 no. is reg to

I am trying to find out who a 1800 number is registered to - I have tried eircom and they say it is a BT ireland number - when I ring BT ireland they says that I have to ring the number and ask - my problem is that i suspect it is part of a scam.

Anyone have any ideas?

AFAIK know 1800 numbers are free (Eircom could confirm) so would you have anything to lose by phoning to ask? What kind of scam do you think is going on?
