How to fill in a pdf form...any help please!

Hi folks,

Can anyone tell me how to fill in text into a pdf form?

if it can be done its just like a word document,, you type it in

nope...it wont let me enter text at all. It lets me place the cursor at the begining of where I want to enter text but that's it.

You can print it out and fill it in by hand

ETA: Seriously, most PDF docs can't be edited. If it says to fill it in, it usually means to print it out first

You can only enter text electronically into certain types of PDF or with certain types of PDF applications. In many cases it's simpler to just print it off and fill it in by hand.
 
The PDF has to be created a certain way to let you enter text into it.

Most aren't not created like that.

PDF-XChange Viewer (despite its name) allows you to type over Pdf documents. I have used it to fill in standard information on Pdf forms - which I then use as a template and fill in the rest of the infor by hand (as its a slightly clunky process). The basic program is free, but you can pay for more advanced features.

Have you tried right-click on the document window to see what options display?

If commenting is enabled you would be able to add your text that way.
I don't have one to hand to check what the options are.
 
It can be done alright Killter, I have Adobe pdf writer at work and text can be input or deleted easily in the "Touch Up Text" option. It's probably an expensive version of the Adobe Acrobat software.

Are you talking about PDF's you've created yourself, or ones that somoeone else has created and that are locked from editing.

Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional and Adobe Designer 7.0 are pre-loaded on the machine, I presume it's one of those that allows me do it. It applies to both pdfs created by me and by others. Most pdfs I deal with are not locked or password protected. I presume that if one was locked that there wouldn't be anyway of amending it, certainly not easily anyway!
 
I think its an important distinction to make if the PDF is your own, or someone else's.

Obviously you can edit your own. But the whole point of PDF's is to prevent the layout/content from being altered. Which is why you often have to print them out to fill them in. However you can create PDF forms if you want people to fill them in electronically. You don't see that too often though.
 
Acrobat Distiller/Professional is overkill here in terms of cost in my opinion. There are better more cost effective suggestions earlier in the thread for somebody who only rarely needs to fill in PDF files electronically.
 
You can try www.pdffiller.com to fill in your pdf forms. It is probably the easiest way to do that. You don`t have to install any software. Just click anywhere and start typing. You can print, Email, fax, or export your form as well.
