How to deal with a rodent in the back garden?

Over the weekend I did a spot of gardening and noticed a large grey rat scurrying behind my plants towards my shed. I have had a problem with some mice in the shed but I laid down poison and traps and they were knocked on the head. The poison is still in the shed and I did buy one of those sonic rodent repeller as I have a power supply there.

Should I also place poison under the shed?
At the moment I’m reluctant as I don’t want to kill ‘innocent’ small furry animals also.

I live in a rural location so I should expect the odd rodent to pass through; I just don’t want him to hang about.

Also I have one of those home composters in the garden.

You know what they say? In Ireland you're never more than seven feet from a rat.....so I say put a humane trap down, catch the little rodent and go and drop him off somewhere far, far away....

That's one less to shudder about.

We have one who seems to have settled himself in quite nicely to the garage, one fine day we'll see about evicting him, just haven't got around to it yet.

Or at least 14 feet away :)

less that 7 feet if you live close to Dail Eireann...

put down the poison.

If birds can get at the poison, they will often eat it too.

My suggestion is use rat traps (as cruel as possible) and/or else remove obvious food sources.

There are loads of posts on this topic.

Why would you be wantonly cruel to any living animal? What, so his relatives get the message that you mean business? If you must kill the rat, do it as quickly and humanely as possible. Jeez, do you swerve your car so as to better hit animals on the road too :(

Well I’ll give him till the weekend to pack his bags then out comes the poison.

Believe me, he's going nowhere as long as he has a food source and somewhere to mooch around - i.e. the composter.

I'd use dynamite attached to vats of acid.;)

I do have a composter but I turn it frequently, I’ll have another stab at it this weekend although I would not to impale him on my fork.

When I lay rat poison I do so by cutting up 4" pipes in to 6' lengths and putting the poison inside - no probs with birds or other animals accessing the poison.

Relax Sherman. Did you know that dying by rat poison is a tortuous and lengthy process ?
I dont want to kill birds so I choose to use rat traps. My 'cruel' comment was meant as a sarcastic response to the 'humane' rat traps and transportation of said rats to other places.

By the way, I find the metal ones with the sharps spikes most effective. ;-)
