We paid €9000 rent in 2007 and when I was on paye I calculated it said we were in entitled to €3600 back which can't be right. I reckon it's €9000/100 x 20% which is €1800 correct ???

Nope, it's virtually nothing to do with the amount of rent you paid. You get a tax credit which equates to something like 200 Euros per annum per person - if you paid paye tax during that period.

So where are they getting the 3600 from on the revenue website. So you reckon its 200 per person :(

I got €400 rent relief on my P21 last year - @ 41% i think this equates to €164 (please correct me if i'm wrong on that calculation - i'm not in finance!)

It is all explained here:
http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/housing/renting_a_home/tax_relief_for_tenants.html

Under 55: the maximum amount a single person under 55 can get is €400 (€2,000 x 20%) for rent paid in 2010. The maximum amount a married couple or widowed person can get is €800 (€4,000 x 20%) for rent paid in 2010
.

To answer your question as to where 3600 is coming from. It should read, if you are married and paying more than €3600 in rent the max you can claim is a credit at the standard rate.

i.e. so in 2007 it was €1800*20%=360 for single person under the age of 55; €3600*20%=720 for married couple under the age of 55.
