How much of a deposit is normal when renting

Also when the rent was increased on our apartment last year, we were also asked to pay some more towards the deposit so that it was still equal to one month's rent.

Agree that one month's rent as deposit is still normal
Never before heard of having to subsequently increase the deposit as part of a rent review.

We were signing a new lease at the time, so the terms of the new lease included the new deposit. I didn't have a problem with it as it meant that everyone's rent was fully covered if one of the others decided to do a runner/not pay. Given that the rent comes out of my bank account, I was happier knowing that I wouldn't personally be left stuck.

Depends on the lease - One month is standard and forget about getting this back or at least do not rely on it. The Landlord will charge you for cleaning carpets and re painting the propert when you move out. Clear this up in advance and always get everything in writing. Threshold are a good organistaion and will provide you with more details

Good luck

'forget about getting this back' - this is nonsense the vast majority of landlords return deposits with no issues just as most tennants don't wreck the house they are living in.

Can't agree with this. I have never had any problems getting my deposit back.

As to the deposit top-up, I really don't see what the big deal is. We started a new lease, the rent increased, the deposit held increased to match the rent. It just happened that two of us from the previous contract were also signing the new one. As I said, as the person from whose account the rent is paid, I prefer that there's a full month's deposit there should anyone screw me over.

Darius M surely the landlord shouldn't charge you for cleaning carpets and repainting house when you move out, surely this falls under wear and tear and shouldn't be withheld from the deposit, unless of course the cleaning and painting is needed to repair something which falls outside the concept of normal wear and tear
