How long does it take a solicitor to find out if a will was made in the case of a deceased relative? Is there a central regiser for wills or how do they investigate it?
 
no central register. If solicitor was deceased's solicitor, then s/he should be able to tell you very quickly if will was made. however, bear in mind that some people use other advisors to make wills, such as accountants.

If the solicitor you are using was not deceased's solicitor, then it could take quite a long time.

If you live in a town, try phoning all solicitors in the town - not practical if in a larger town or city. Also ask relatives if they are aware of will.
 
Thanks for replying. We have tried the Solicitor that we believe was there Solicitor and there appears to be no will made with them. Relatives do not know anything about a Will.
 
you need to ask solicitor then how to go about it. Sometimes you see ads in paper seeking wheraouts of will.

if person died intestate (without will) then the estate is divided up as per the law applying in the country where the deceased was resident.
 
Purely as a matter of interest. What would happen if the estate was divided on the basis of no will being made and it then came to light 5 years later that a will did exist? Would the will have any status once probate was granted to the "no will" estate?
 
Strictly speaking if a will is found after distribution then the executor of the will should seek to reclaim the funds so distributed. Whether or not this can be done will depend on whether the statute of limitations applies.

most solicitors, myself included, would advise against using an online will service, but if you want to go that route, try www.wills.ie
