How long can a landlord retain a security deposit

Hi

I handed back the keys of a house I was renting last Tuesday. The house was sparkling as I decorated the whole house and cleaned all the carpets. The owner came to view the house and said he had not seen it looking so good. A person from the letting agency came the next day and checked a few things and also said it was looking great. I told him about a small burn mark on the carpet and he said it was wear and tear. I asked him when I would get my deposit back and he said his boss would give it back to me within 7 days. I emailed the boss on Friday and have heard nothing. Is there a time limit when they have to contact me and give me my deposit back?

There is not, unfortunately. It should be within a reasonable timeframe, and 7 days is enough to return it. I would keep hounding them. Your only recourse is to lodge a complaint with the PRTB over retention of the deposit, but I'd save that for when you have exhausted all other avenues and are starting to doubt if you'll get it back.

It sounds like it's just laziness, so hopefully you may even have it by now.

I think they should have given it back to you after the inspection. Shoddy behaviour. Nothing easier than writing a cheque or going to an ATM machine.

I don't the law defines this so I presume it would be probably difficult to demand unless a month or so had passed.
