How do you watch a download?

Hi,

I downloaded successfully to my laptop but I cannot figure out how to open the files. It gives me the option of burning to disc which I don't particularly want to do. I want to watch on the laptop. I have downloaded both Divx and Flashplayer but still can't view. Would anyone know a simple way to do this? Just to add I'm pretty sure the files are not corrupted.

Have you checked what format the downloaded file is in?
You may not have the right software to open it.
You could then google to get the appropriate software to open the file if you don't have it on your computer.

How would I find the format? I checked under properties but can't see anything obvious?
 
Does the file name have a visible extension i.e. end in .mov , .avi or .mpg etc? If not, assuming you are using a windows OS, right click on the file, select Properties and on the General tab there should be a label 'Type of file' or similar. Then use this info as outlined above.

Did you do a right click on properties? That will usually tell you what type of file it is. (won't work if it's a folder with lots of files though as then the properties will only show that it's a folder.)
If it is something like a WinRar file, you need specific software to open it.
When you try to open it (by right clicking on the file), you should get an option to 'open with' and then there is an option to search for the appropriate program on the internet, as far as I remember.
If this doesn't work, would you save it onto disc as suggested?
Have you also run your anti-virus and antispyware programs on the file first (just to make sure there is nothing nasty contained within?)

When I right click one file states CUE image file. There is nothing on the other one apart from the drive where the file is saved.

When I try to open with the available software e.g Media Player - it advises that Media Player doesn't recognise the file.

I ran anti-virus on both and they both seem ok. I have tried burning to CD but it it says not enough space on the cd and to separate the files. (I don't have a notion how to even start going about doing this and after spending over five hours today downloading all sorts of different packages, I've used up my patience for even trying anymore).

I thought I might have overlooked something simple so figured it was worth asking. Not to worry. And thanks for your replies.
 
try 'CUE file type' or similar in a search engine, should help you.

CDRWIN apparently will allow you to burn this to CD-R or CD-RW.(Also Blindwrite, Fireburner)
Can you google this? (I am not at my home computer, and cannot check if links are safe to open or not, so I haven't given you a link. Websites such as tucows and download might have software (freeware) you could use)
You need to look at the properties of the file also to see how big it is (may be too large to fit on disc, if you are getting the message to separate the files.

Thanks Nicola - I'll give it a shot another day. At the moment I've reached the end of my tether with it and am minutes from throwing it out the window
 
- a .cue file is basically a .txt file that has track times and names inside it.

You never really use a .cue file by itself, is there another file that came with it? such as: .bin, .ape, .iso, .nrg? See below:



The idea for a cue file is to load it into a player and listen to the exact replica of a CD. I use foobar to play .cue files. You do not need to burn it to a CD just to listen to it, that's only optional.
 
Hi,

The .cue file doesn't have any attached files. When I right click one file, the only option is to play or open. Media Player seems to be the web recommended player but when I click on it, it says it can't read it.

When I click on the other file (which is the one with the CUE), it opens Roxio automatically. This gives me the option of writing to disc. When I try to burn it, it can't read the disc (I originally thought the cd might have been used already) but when I inserted a new cd, it advised that the file is too large and needs to be split (I'm not even going to try and go there).

I downloaded pretty much the same way as I would have with a music file although it took hours to do. I ran anti-virus scans and afaik they are clean files.

I've been very persistent with this all day but to no avail. They're video files if that makes any difference. Its so frustrating :mad:
 
I don't think WMP plays .cue files PM.

Can you tell me the exact names and extentions of the files?

If it is a .cue file foobar2000 will play it with a monkey audio (ape) plugin.

Alternative would be to convert the audio to mp3 or something.
 
Sorry Snakebite I really don't know the exts. There are two folders in my downloaded files. One says BIN file and the other says CUE. There isn't a list of files including exts. The second folder simply has the name of the video.

I appreciate all your help (and Nicola's and Rmellys) with this but I'm computer illiterate and am ready to give up.
 
No that's all i needed to know PM. It's either a music cd copy or a movie copy you downloaded.

I can load the bin file straight into media player classic on my machine and it works. Not: media player classic is not the same as windows media player albeit very similar.

I know exactly how to deal with these files, the hard part is translating it so you can understand.

You see I don't know if the file is a movie or audio cd so I don't know what program to tell you to downoad.

If you can right-click on the CUE file and click open with notepad or even use worpad and copy some text to paste here I could probably tell if it is audio or video.

I'm afraid I'm back with another problem. I've been using VLC and it was working great until today. I'm getting the following message. Does anyone know what it means or how to fix it?

No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "WVC1". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
