Hi there,
Our financial situation is possibly going to change dramatically. There is a possibility Mr. Bear will face redundancy.

As a result of this I will have to look at becoming a contractor, as the salaries are not great where I work.
WHat do you need to do to become a contractor, what are the best agencies for this and are there alot of contract positions out there.

I am based in Dublin.
Many thanks for your time,
P:)

Your best bet may be to talk to an Agency, Eden on the quays I would recommend, or CPL. Options to consider are to whether set-up as a Limited Company,or Sole Trader etc, but whichever agency you register to with they should be able to guide you on best option.

You can do a search on IrishJobs.ie or RecruitIreland.com and search for Java contract roles and this will give you an overview of whats out there.

Thanks U2Fan,
Are you a contractor? How do you find it? Are you ever out of work? Sorry about all the questions but I am very new to this and know very little about the whole area. It would be a big enough move - but would it be worth moving form my current job to become a contractor..
Cheers,
P:)

Realistically you'll need to set up a Limited Company in which you will be a director. This will bring responsibility to have accounts etc. in order. An accoutant will setup up the company and do you're accounts for maybe 1500-2000 per annum.

Plan to be out of contract for 1-2 months per year. If you get into a long-term/rolling contract it might be less than that, but you need to be prepared.

When making the decision bear in mind you will have to look after your own pension, health insurance, and any other benefits you may have with permanent employement.

I contract for a similar reason to yourself, my partner only works part-time due to dependant.

Reading my own post back, it's pretty negative. That wasn't my intention. There are plenty of positives also such as: take home pay, allowable expenses, etc.

I think I have to be pretty organised about this - my brother in law will help me set myself up as a ltd company - realistically I should be looking at staying in a company 6mths to a year. I am prepared for that.

Camel I didn't take any negatives from your post - just the reality - which I really need...
Many thanks for you advice..
P:)
