I've been with AOL (currently 8Mbps) for 7 virtually trouble-free years. Recently my P.C. began to run very slowly. I did all the usual trouble-shooting things, finally resorting to a 'System Restore'. Not much changed. Things slowed down even further. It wasn't a virus or anything untoward.
Last weekend it took about half-an-hour to download a fairly modest document.
I contacted AOL Helpline which is now in India. The chap diagnosed that still-active copies of AOL on my system, created during system restores, were trebling the time taken. He would post me the latest version of AOL (9.0) on CD and I could instal that and uninstal the old versions. I have received the new CD.
HOWEVER.......... I can't instal the new version as the existing 8.0 versions are 'holding' my membership and account status, name and password. AND when I go to 'control panel' 'Add/Uninstal programmes' I cannot find any AOL 8.0 installation (though it is/must be on my system; I am using it to send this).
Can anyone help? What do I do next? How do you upgrade if there is an existing version and where do I look for the installation if it does not appear in the list of installed programmes?
Any advice would be very much appreciated as the slowness of my connection is now chronic.
