How do I download a podcast?

I wanted to listen to old radio shows which are now only available in podcasts. I don't even know the basics of podcasts

Can I listen online without downloading?
Is there any site for learning how to download a podcast?
I tried to figure it out before posting here and ended up installing iTunes but I have a Sony mp3 and SonicStage. Does anyone know what media I need to install?
Is there somewhere to type in the url of the programme I want?
How do I select what I want to listen to?
Whats the thing about RSS feeds? I always thought this was just for live shows? Is this needed for audio books etc?

I don't know even the basics for googling this info. When I tried I just keep getting lists of podcast directories and instructions which assume I know the basics. The only website I have found which makes it relatively ok to transfer a podcast onto my mp3 is BBC. But I also want Irish radio stations!

As i understand you must search the web for one, then load it into your player ie iTunes or Juice etc..and i assume they will allow you to manage them.

install itunes on your pc and use its search facility / input IP address
