How do I add a device halfway along a phone wire?

I want to connect a device half-way along a run of phone cable in my hallway. If it was a plumbing job I'd put in a T - what is the equivalent for phone cable?
 
Put a junction box where you are taking your extension from. The terminals are marked clear enough on the standard phone sockets. eg L1 L2 for the line.
