hotel cancellation for wedding

what are the legal rights of the consumer here?

on another forum someone has posted the following issue:

1. Couple book hotel for wedding. guests book their rooms in the hotel.
2. Immediate member of couple's family passes away 1 month prior to the wedding.
3. Couple wish to downsize and postpone wedding. hotel is no longer suitable as it is for much arger wedding.
4.No contracts signed, no terms and conditions supplied to couple at time of booking.
5. Hotel is refusing to refund guests room bookings and the booking deposit of 3k(paid by credit card).

regarding the guests room bookings should the hotel refund?
 
Personally I never look for a deposit back if I book anything and I have to cancel.What is the point in booking in the first place. The deposit gives some protection to the business owner....God knows things are bad enough.

i think 1 month is very late and the hotel should only refund if the room andindividual rooms are occupied. The hotel have lost out here too and in 1 month its highly likely they won't have any function to cater for (no work for casual staff) etc.
Its unfortunate.

Its an old saying that its bad luck to put off a wedding for a funeral, so why not have the smaller wedding at the same venue within the month. i have been in a similar situation and no matter the time difference the absense of the loved one on the day is sad no matter when.
 
The standard is that Wedding Deposits are only refunded if the venue manages to re-hire the room for that date to another party. Not too sure about the bedrooms, it seems strange that they were pre-paid in full?
 
to clarify it seems the 3k was the deposit only.

as for the rooms yes interesting point.... but i'm assuming if the guests now cancel the rooms, the full fees will be taken from their credit card.

I've booked hotels a few times this year, and all of them stated that they'd refund the deposit on cancellation as long as i gave 2 days notice, so not giving refund with a months notice is strange one i'd have thought.. The other thing was it was on my credit card and basically they just held my details, and that the deposit would only be taken if i didnt cancel on time.
 
After watching RTE's offering last night. Try letting slip that it is a travelers wedding....
 
I'm not sure how it works but certainly the guests should just cancel their room bookings as this usually only requires 24 hours notice.

WRT to banqueting room, how would you feel if they rang you and said they wanted to cancel for some reason and want to refund your deposit and go along the lines of your 4th point "No contracts signed, no terms and conditions supplied to couple at time of booking", I'm sure you'd be hopping mad.

If it was me I try to meet them half way and offer them some sort of deposit and let the guests sort out their own bookings.
