Home office in rented house - tax deduction?

Is there a tax deduction one can claim if self-employed, and working from home office in a rented home? Can't find anything on Revenue website.

Well, perhaps you can claim for expenses in the correct proportion, as regards private use vs commercial use.

But...
Does your lease allow you to carry out a business from the rented home? Is your landlord insured for this?, or aware of this?
 
Thanks Joe. No landlord yet - we are still looking for a place. Trying to find out if expenses can be written off, and how much deduction would be, to determine our budget.

We would certainly clear it with the landlord first. Husband is technically self-employed, but contracted solely to a firm who pay his professional liability insurance. Think the home office would be covered under that, but must check.

His employers have no insurable interest (no "ownership" in the property in other words) so therefore it can't be covered.

I see what you are saying. His contract with them does state they will cover any and all necessary insurance costs, but this thread has reminded me that we do need to look into what type of cover will be necessary to insure a home office in a rented house. Does anyone know? Would it fall under general renter's contents insurance?

So it sounds like we would have to get the landlord to cover the home office on his home insurance. I wonder how many would be willing to do that, though, even if we paid for it.
