Hi,2 weeks ago we got a new kitchen fitted. We bought the kitchen from a company which does not supply the fitter. The kitchen cost alot of money around 18k and the fitter an extra 1400.I live in a 2 bed apt.

The guys came and fitted the kitchen, and a week later the whole kitchen flooded we did not know it had behind all the units in the kitchen.
the water went under the bedroom floorboards and out the en suite door way-its only a new apt so the floors are only in a month, bathroom not done as yet etc.

We are devestated, the kitchen fitter has said it was our mis use of the sink erator which is the cause. He fitted the erator which is a waste disposal thing for veg down your sink. I did not do anything mad to it nothing abnormal went down it during the week i had it,but i think it did block the pipes.I dont think they fitted the pipes correctly to take the erator, and there were open pipes that spouted the water everwhere.

When we took the kick board off the bottom of the kitchen there was loose electrics under the units which are all sizzling and now the sockets are not working.

Anyway what can i do?

The kitchen fitter is telling me to go to my isurance and they are saying our floors and kitchen are not covered because we only have contents insurance...

can anyone give me any advice how to proceed-

I think you will have to establish the exact cause of the flood,if it was caused by misuse of the in sink earator there is nothing to do.If it was caused by faulty fitting you have to go after the kitchen fitter he should have liability insurance. The other thing is that maybe the in sink earator is at fault in that case go after the retailer who sold you the product.

You might want to check if the use of sinkerators have been banned by your local authority, before kicking up a fuss.

Do you belong to a Management company? If so your maintenance fee includes building insurance. The Building insurance should cover Fittings (kitchen adn Bathroom). See if you can get a copy from the agency. However would recommend you try and find out where and how the problem occured. I wouldnt like to claim on my insurance especially if someone else was at fault. Good luck

hi thanks all, yeah mousey i am on the residents committe here and i have the insurance guy coming, but they might say it is the kitchen fitters fault..

after a few days there of digesting everything we think it is the kitchen fitters fault due to bad installation,i have a guy coming tomorrow about the erator, they said if it is faulty they are liable but if they are installed correctly they do not block up.

Last night we had to get another electrician in to do a survey, the electrics are all over the place, extension leads used beside the sink and open sockets left on the floor with very old bad cabling used, thats just a start.

I personally think these guys did a really bad job,i feel robbed for the 1510 it cost me after paying 16k for my new kitchen, how can the kitchen company recommend such cowboys...

the results are disasterous,il have to get onto my solicitor.

Thanks for the support guys xx
