Hi

Completely clueless here but my mother has a huge garden and we have decided to do a veg patch. Loads of plans and ideas as to what to plant but.....

It is currently knee high weed patch! What is the best way to get rid of them and turn soil?
- Just turn soil with weeds as they are and pick them out as we go?
- Cover plot in black plastic and leave for a while?
- Pour weed killer over them? But if we did this would you be able to grow veg there then? And if so how long would it take to be able to use ground?
- Hire a rotavator or do by hand? Plot about 20ft x 20ft and 2 women with bad backs!

Thanks in advance for replies! If we got any quick answers we might start today......gorgeous morning!

Strim down the weeds to a decent length and pull them out by hand. No local youngsters fancy giving you a hand? We had loads of offers from local teens when we started. (Perhaps we were just lucky!)

Only clear as much ground as you are going to plant at any one time.....clear ground with no planting will encourage more weeds or cats to go digging! Any weed-killer will also kill your your plants/seeds, most of them say not to plant for up to 18 months!!

The 1st few days will be hard going but it will be worth it in the end.....promise! We've got onion sets, carrots and parsnips planted out already with peas, cabbage, tomatoes, cauli and broccoli in seed trays germinating. Cucumbers on the window sill and a load of salad leaves ready for us and our lizards.

If you want to plant potatoes, now is the time to get them so that they can be 'chitting' ready for when the frosts are gone.

Best of luck!!

Weed it as previous poster has suggested. But also allow the next crop of weeds to emerge. These will be smaller and easier to remove.

Then pop you veg down.

A terrific no chemical spot weed killer is just boiling water. Weeds shrivel up and no harmful residue.

Thanks for that! Will just have to get stuck in! Really looking forward to it!
