Help needed for Share transfer

I have share certs in a company that was recently taken over. I've kept them in a safety deposit box until now, but I need to send them to the US to be exchanged for shares in the new company. Should I send them by Fedex (or one like that) ? And should they be insured ? The value of the certs would be in the 5 digit category. Thanks.
