Hello again, I am just wondering how high a neighbours hedge can be before something can be done about it. The person living behind us has a hedge if you could call it that dividing our backs, I have erected fencing on our side at a cost and it still looks ridiculous, It is at the same height as the bottom level of our roof even though it is 18 feet away from the back of our house. It looks sloppy and more importantly blocks any sun light, Again I would appreciate any advice on this, Regards Salaried.

I dont know the answer to your question, but in typical Irish fashion I will supply an opinion. Some years ago one of our near neighbours grew evergreen trees which took off in a nuclear capacity and rose to roof level initially and then mushroomed outwards at the base. It resulted in the owner's garden being drastically reduced in size and his neighbour's invaded by branches. Light was blocked also.

The local council issued an edict:- (a) the trees were to be cut down to 10 ft and (b) the owner was responsible for trimming the trees to prevent incursion into next door. There was a bit of bad blood for some time, but the maintenance of the trees got to their owner who eventually (and at considerable expense) had them dug up. The 'bad-blood' issue was resolved also as a result of the no-maintenance after the removal of the trees.

Not sure of the legal position on this salaried, one of the legal eagles will probably tell ye that. But there is another consideration for you. It's likely the hedge root system are in your garden and leaching your soil of water and nutrients and not just light.

You might consider deep digging along the fence and inserting a barrier (dig to about 10/15 inches or until you come to root-free soil). My neighbour has wild growing hedge. I just cut it myself to the level of the fence (it's annoying to have to!) and say nothing.

There have been threads on this subject in the past, the search facility should find some of them.
