Hedges or shrubs for shallow soil

I have an area at the side of the house which slopes down to a laneway. The soil is shallow only about 6 inches( on top of stone fill) but drainage is good. I have heard beech plants can tolerate shallow soil. Has anyone any ideas on what to plant? Thanks.

If you want just a hedge and not tall trees, why not try a box hedge? They don't need deep rootspace and give great privacy once they grow. Don't grow crazy out of control either.
