Does anyone know of a health insurance policy that just covers major items - in-patient in a range of hospitals including hi-tech and 'major' out-patient treatment? Basically I am interested in health insurance if I need a hip replacement, heart operation, or get cancer, I am not fussed about claiming €20 here-or-there to visit the GP or a couple of sessions of physio, or private A&E (I live a long way from the nearest one!). It seems like all the policies that cover the hi-tech hospitals also add in lots of these smaller payments, which I assume must crank up the cost quite a bit as I see on here people talking about making claims on a monthly basis. Thanks.

If you are ok with some excesses, shortfalls etc then there's a discussion here on LAYA Control 600 Connect which may fit the bill.

Control 600 connect has the exact same rubbishy little rebates as every other policy. I completely agree with the OP. I wish someone would do a policy that covers just the big concerns in life. I have no interest in getting a tenner back on GP visits or having access to an on-call nurse. I'm sure for some people these things are useful but I really think the insurance companies just use them to pad out the list of benefits at very little cost to themselves.

I have Irish Life and I can't fault them, I get blood tests, xray and Mri covered, I only have a mid range policy with 65% cover in the high tech hospitals, it's the best policy I can afford.
But I also have access to the prescription service which is invaluable for getting repeat scripts for heartburn tablets / Asthma / HRT etc - it saves a fortune on docs visits.
They will also be covering 50% of orthotics that I need to get made.
