my son got a ps3 for xmas, at the moment he is just hooked up to the old tube tv in the living room via scart connection . we plan to get a smallish (26" or 29") lcd for his room for his birthday in feb. my question is - are all hdmi cables the same, ie. quality wise? how much should i expect to pay for tv and cable?

Impossible to say how much a TV will cost as the prices change every day. You won't see much benefit with HDMI on such a small set.

The cost of the cables varies with length, about 20-30 euro. Quality is not a big deal as it's a digital interconnection and it either works or it does not.

For best compatibility, get a cable complying with HDMI 1.3.

hi tech.
at the moment he is only on a standard tube 26"with scart, wont the quality be any better at all on a hd 29"with hdmi connection?

Some say that old-fashioned CRTs give better colour than LCDs. Main reason for LCD purchase is the availability of bigger screens, no static or flicker, thin form factor and lower power consumption.

But, what I meant was that on a small set you will see little difference between HDMI and RGB/Scart.

I heard that blu ray disks won't give colour unless connected by hdmi, not sure how true this is.

have a look at http://www.powercity.ie (www.powercity.ie) for prices on tv. I got them to through in the hdmi cable for nothing recently. the cable was about 15 quid.

Not true. But, you won't get up to full HD without an HDMI cable connected to a set that supports the HD security system, this is to stop people making full HD copies.

The difference is not really noticeable on sets less than 40" or non 1080 sets. But, if you've got a connection and cheap cable, no harm in using it.
