Have car rental prices gone mad ?

They are still advertising sales
Unsurprising given that used car prices are continuing to escalate. If they calculate that they can make more money selling stock than keeping it to rent out and sell later when prices have probably dipped back to normal levels, that's what they'll do.

It's to do with the vrt.

Car rentals for short term hire don't pay vrt until they are 6 months old.

The dealers buy them back at 6 months and sell them on and the vrt is calculated then on the value of the car at that point.

So you will always have ex hire cars in the used car market no matter what the shortage as it makes economic sense

Thanks, not the first time that a harsh and unnecessary tax has inadvertently wrecked an economic market.
