has my Privot hedging died ?

Last May we planted a row of native privot hedging and it thrived through the summer, but late autumn it started to shed and by December it was completely bare.

We had laurel hedging planted the year before which we had to remove as it had died and we suspect the winter salting of roads may have caused this as its very close to a main road that gets regularly salted during icy weather. As a preventative we put a 18 inch screen against the plants to prevent the salt / grit getting at the roots.

Would the fact that it shed all its leaves indicate that it has died, or is there a chance it will revive in spring ?

If it has indeed died does anyone have recommendations for a hardy hedging that will withstand salting / gritting ? its west facing and does not get a lot of sunshine as there are large tree's opposite so the setting sun does not really get to it at all and the house blocks out morning and afternoon sun. ( we were told privot is very hardy and does not need a lot of sunshine to thrive ?)
