Half days vacation for court appearance?

Hi,

I just have a quick question that I'd like peoples opinions on.

I had to go to court this morning over penalty points. I was back in work at 1:30. Should I have to take a half days vacation for this or should it be some type of personal leave?

Thanks and all replies are much appreciated.

What does your contract say about leave?

In my experience, "personal leave" is a very grey area. A boss might consider an hour's absence to see a doctor/dentist acceptable and not require you to take holiday time but I can't imagine them seeing a half day to go to court as ok.

Yea, I can see your point and my bosses I guess. I'm not sure what my contract states. I didn't realise I would be that long but if I knew I had to take a half days leave, I wouldn't have rushed back without taking lunch.

Thanks for your response.

Not really, that's the same difference only worse as I was still phoning/texting my colleagues regarding workstuffs before during and after my court appearance.

As an employer, if you are careless enough to get penalty points, why should I pay for you to go to court to sort it out? Half day vacation

Well, with respect, you don't know the circumstances which the points were given so the Judge understood this and I was cleared without fine.

Anyway, I get the employers point of view and I agree. Half Days Vacation is required.
