GSK Cork are offering an "11 month" contarct. Does anyone know what the prospects at this company are like after the 11months. Im in a permanent job athe moment but want to change carreers!!!

what sector are you in at the moment...???

no guarantee that you will get the position unless you have the relevant skill set... there is a lot of competition for those jobs in cork..

GSK offer excellent terms and conditions.. prob one of the best in cork..

good chance that you would be kept on i'd think as they are a company that are expanding all the time and doing well !!!

best of luck.......

Its a good company but i would think about the loss of perks and benefits if you go from perm to contract and also the real fact that you could be contract for 3/4 years in the role - do you need to get a mortgage in that time - it may pose a problem as bankers are tightening their lending restrictions etc right now, are you planning on having children etc which could impact your decision
If its an area where you want to get into then i reckon go for it, sitting in a perm job just for security is not a good enought excuse in my opinion.
After pfizer going down there, there is no security in even permanenet jobs so if you feel its right for you go for it.

cheers lads for the advice...

Well, im in manufacturing at the moment (electronics) and would like to get into chemical!!
Im getting a feeling that all manufacturing in ireland will struggle in the future...I have a mortgage for the past two years but losing the security of a permanent job is my biggest worry....

I dont like the idea of working on a contract for 3/4 years, i would feel "on edge" until the contact is renewed....

I really dont know what to do.....

the thing is there is no thing really as a permanent job unless its civil service based. you could be permanent anywhere and it could go bust/close/outsource etc. that's just my take.

true....
"permanent" to me is a "golden hand-shake/pay off" if the company go's bust...
I have mortgage protection but i wonder would there be problems if i volunteerd to leave my "permanent" job for a contract role mmmmmm??

and also....im getting married next summer, so i have a lot to think about????

that reminds me....
I got mortgage repayment protection as an extra when i got my mortgage two years ago (sounded like a nice idea at the time)...
I have to check out what i signed up for.....
